I often get asked what is the best thing to wear for family pictures. Honestly I feel like it comes down to these two things ...
1) You need to be yourself, and you need to dress comfortably. Your family will act naturally if they are wearing something they are comfortable in.
2) Color! Wearing color in you photos will make them come alive. Choose one or two colors that you like and do your best to make coordinating outfits for each member of your family using nueturals to tone it down. Here are a few ideas.
